If you tighten too much, you'll pull on the fabric which can lead to wear and tear, in addition to the puckering from a gathered hole making it harder for a patch to stay on. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese can be gently ironed for a more long-lasting effect if the garment you are repairing can tolerate it. You can also use a hairdryer for heat treatment if the garment cannot withstand an iron. There are also dedicated sashiko groups on Facebook, for example, and several handicraft associations offer sashiko courses, so check a handicraft association near you if you are interested!
