The Book of Boro is about an ancient Japanese mending technique. Sashiko is the method of sewing and repairing, while boro refers to the garments that remain after layers upon layers of repairs over time, originally as a result of poverty. The word means "rags."
Repair enthusiasts worldwide have been fascinated and inspired by these garments. The book covers some of the history behind boro (approx. 10 pages). Following this, there is an overview of equipment and various sewing techniques and materials used later in the book.
The book features 10 projects based on vintage boro items that the author has collected. She herself became interested in boro and sashiko when she worked as an English teacher in Japan in the 90s.
While one can create entirely new items with new fabrics using this technique for these projects, they can also be used to utilize fabric scraps or old clothes that are no longer worn but one doesn't want to part with, for instance.
