My (Eva Kittelsen's) sashiko teacher, Atsushi Futatsuya, whom I first learned from through a digital course and then went on a retreat with in Japan, has written a book! He is a 3rd generation sashiko craftsman/artist who dedicates his life to conveying the essence of sashiko, what it is, beyond a handicraft technique, repair technique or aesthetic.
As sashiko has become more and more popular globally, he fears that it will become so popular that the "trend" will overwhelm and uproot what it once was, instead of continuing the tradition (my allegory, based on how I understand him).
This book is written to provide guidance, context, and keys that not only teach you to create something that looks like sashiko, but to understand more of the feelings and mindset behind it.
It is an invitation not only to make beautiful things, but to understand more of the origins so that through your own practice you can become one of those who learn to learn from sashiko, and thus become one of those who can carry on the legacy. This applies not only through practicing the craft, but also through the values and attitudes that emerge through rhythmic, caring stitches.
The book not only teaches you to appreciate sashiko, it also sets an example for how we ourselves can appreciate our own craft traditions and understand more about where we come from, back when shaping textiles with needle and thread in everyday life was not a hobby, but a vital skill and a connection to, and protection from, nature.
I haven't read the book yet! But based on my own experiences with sashiko, and my conversations with Atsushi Futatsuya and other things I have read and seen from him, as well as the pictures and texts from the book, I think the description is quite spot on :)
