Kogin is a type of embroidery somewhat similar to Norwegian Hardanger embroidery or smøyg. Geometric patterns are created by covering areas of fabric with a distinct, countable weave.

I can imagine that it could be exciting and nice to use as a decorative stitch in repairs, on elbow patches, and so on. These kits are designed to make coasters, but can also be used for patches. In any case, they are a great introduction to the technique!

You can use the patterns on other garments where you can count threads (or stitches) to reinforce worn areas.

Kogin was developed because hemp fabric was the only material available to poor farmers in Japan between the 1600s and 1800s. It was a very cold and rough fabric. By using counted stitches with thick thread, a softer surface and more insulation were created.

The kit contains 1 skein of kogin thread, 1 kogin needle, and fabric for the counted embroidery. The instructions are in Japanese but consist mostly of illustrations. English digital instructions will be available eventually and can be sent by email. The supplier is currently preparing them for us. A finished coaster measures approximately 10 x 10 cm.
