We have created a template for a sashiko variation of the olive leaf pattern on the Keffiyeh, which can be used to make hearts for Christmas decorations, or for mending/decorating garments and other textiles.
The olive leaf pattern connects the keffiyeh to the hope of freedom and the preservation of the roots of both the land and the traditions of the region. Olive trees can live for about 600 years and have been a cornerstone of Palestinian culture and economy for centuries. One of the occupation's tools is to burn or cut down these magnificent old trees, which is an attack on both the culture and livelihood of many Palestinians.
110 NOK from each sale is donated to HEAL Palestine, a non-profit that helps in Gaza with Health, Education, Aid and Leadership. You can read more about them here. So there is no profit from these kits, but a small amount of money left over from each to cover VAT, transaction fees, and other expenses.
The kit contains:
- 3 x water-soluble pattern templates*
- Sheet with step-by-step instructions on how to stitch the motif using the hitomezashi technique. There is also an illustration so you can create the pattern yourself by drawing a grid.
- Sashiko thread in black, white, red, and green
- 2 packs of sashiko needles
NB: The kit does not contain fabric for hearts or mending! Use old textiles, fabric scraps, or anything else you can find at home or in other stores.
*Choose whether you want to use the pattern as is, or fill it into a heart shape by following the outline.
