John James has very good quality needles made in England, for many different uses.
I like to use this size 20 chenille needle for repairs on medium-weight woven fabrics, such as jeans and corduroy. It is relatively thick and has room for a full embroidery floss in the eye. With its sharp tip, it is easy to get through medium-weight fabrics.
The size 18 chenille needle is somewhat thicker and longer and can be used for embroidery on looser woven fabric, or also on thicker knitwear.
If you are going to sew a lot in jeans, chinos or similar fabrics, it might be a good idea to use a thimble. It is easy to get sore fingertips, even with good needles.
