For sashiko stitching, special needles are used that are extra sharp and hard, allowing multiple layers of fabric to be pierced with the needle. The eye of the needle is rested against the thimble, which is placed in the palm of the hand (in English, it's called a palm thimble), secured around the finger, and the needle is pushed through the fabric with the entire hand (or the needle is held steady in the palm while the fabric is pushed onto the needle, before "pulling" the fabric off and letting the thread pass through and stretching out the fabric.

The elastic on this thimble might be tight, but it can be replaced with your own elastic that you tie to the appropriate size. We include some extra elastic in case it's too tight!
